All animals are spayed and neutered prior to leaving the shelter, unless the animal is too young for surgery. In those instances, the adopter must be a Daviess County resident (no exceptions) to participate in our foster to adopt program. We also understand that sometimes circumstances change, and our 100 percent adoption guarantee ensures that you can return your pet to us at any time for any reason. We ask that any animal adopted from us not be given away or sold - we encourage you to return them to us to ensure they are rehomed to the right families. Every day, the DCAS adopters reach out to us with amazing stories of pets who have become family, brought joy, and changed lives. Sadly, not every story has a happy ending. Last year, we were able to save nearly 2,100 homeless animals. But as an open intake facility that accepts animals regardless of age, breed, temperament or medical condition, there were hundreds of animals whom we could not save due to health, injury, aggression or for space. Even when the shelter is full, we are not able to refuse other intakes. Once full, the decision to euthanize animals becomes a stark reality. We take in over 3,000 animals a year and only have a set number of kennels in our facility. We face difficult choices every day, but we always make the decision which we believe are in the best interest of each animal. We are working hard to save as many animals as we can, and we are proud that the euthanasia rate for this facility has dropped by more than 75% over the past 10 years. Thanks to programs such as Spay-A-Stray, SAINT,Inc., T-N-R program, the low cost SNAP program, the dedication of our volunteers and foster homes, and the countless Rescue Groups from all across the United States who pull hundreds of animals from this shelter each year, the euthanasia rate continues to drop almost yearly. The Daviess County Animal Shelter works closely with numerous Rescue Groups on a regular basis. If your group would like to join our family of like minded individuals, email us for a Rescue Application. We are often able to help arrange transports to certain areas of the country. DCAS prides itself on being very rescue friendly
